How to find web dev jobs that *aren't* all about frameworks

One of the more common questions I get when I talk about the lean web and working with boring architecture is how to actually find jobs like that.

It seems like every job description now mentions React (or Vue, or something similar).

The truth is, there are a lot more jobs looking for React experience than vanilla JS right now. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible! Here are some good places to look…

  • We Work Remotely is a job board for remote work, and a lot (but by no means all) of the jobs there are framework agnostic.
  • My friend Tim Kadlec just launched his web performance job board, PerfWork, and no surprise, a lot of the jobs there are vanilla HTML/CSS/JS oriented.
  • WordPress roles. While WordPress has gotten a little Reacty with the Gutenberg editor, most WordPress work is still just HTML, CSS, PHP, and a dabbling of jQuery or vanilla JS.

The industry is starting to swing back to server-side rendering, too, so I expect we’ll see a lot more roles for static site generators and tools like Svelte and Astro in the next year or three.
