Time tracking made easy

One of my biggest annoyances as a developer is tracking hours.

Many folks with ADHD have time blindness. That means we literally do not perceive time accurately. This makes both estimating how long things will take, and recounting how long things you already took, nearly impossible.

Because of this, my preference is to not bill hourly. I’ve even structured my entire dev consulting business around flat fees and business outcomes instead of hours worked.

But if you work at a company that bills clients by the hour, you need to track them.

Since I can’t rely on my brain to remember how long a task took, my go-to app for years was Toggl. It works pretty well, nags you if you’re not tracking time, and tracks if you go idle but forget to turn it off.

But it still requires you to open it and start a timer, and sometimes you forget to do that.

Last week, someone in my ADHD Community shared Timing, another app for tracking time that removes the need for you to remember to turn it on.

It runs in the background, and automatically tracks what windows and apps you have open, and how long you use them for. Later on, you can go through your time logs and map activities to different projects.

Unlike Toggl, this one requires a monthly subscription. But if you struggle with actually starting your timers, this looks like an amazing tool to help you actually track your time.
