Writing emails takes forever...

One common theme I’m hearing from students in my Discord community is that writing emails can take a loooonnnggg time when you have ADHD.

You have words in your head, and they make perfect sense, but there’s a lot of them. Somewhere in the process of getting them out of your head and into text, they get… sloppy.

You spend 10 or 20 minutes writing and rewriting your message until it’s perfect. Multiply this by the amount of emails you get in a day, and responding to emails can take up your whole damn day.

So… you end up not responding to a lot of them (which is also bad).

In Getting Shit Done with ADHD, I talk about the shitty first draft…

A lot of folks with ADHD put pressure on themselves to get things perfect the very first time we do them.

This is often the result of a lifetime of being told how we’re not quite living up to our potential and “if only we tried harder.” It often happens in folks who were diagnosed with ADHD later in life.

One of the best pieces of ADHD advice I’ve ever received is: “Anything worth doing is worth doing badly.”

Given yourself permission to write a shitty first draft.

Read it once, hit send, and move on with your life.
