The overwhelm of a new job
Yesterday, I wrote about how I use procedure guides for repetitive tasks so I don’t miss important details.
One place where this becomes really important is when starting a new job or working with a new client.
There are so many little things you need to remember—names, teams, acronyms, processes—and our brains have such a limited amount of working memory to store it all.
It’s really easy to get overwhelmed by it all. And if you struggle with RSD (Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria), you can start to feel some intense feelings of failure or imposter syndrome that just further fuel that overwhelm.
For me, having a process for capturing all of that information is really important. Obsidian is basically always open on my computer.
The good news is that after a few weeks, the tidal wave of information usually slows down, and with it, the overwhelm subsides. But that initial wave can be brutal!
If you find yourself struggling with that, I’m starting up group career coaching for ADHD, where you can get the support you need and turn your ADHD into your career advantage instead of something that holds you back.
