Tasks that need to happen in the future
Folks with ADHD have time blindness and can only keep a few items in working memory at a time. As a result, tasks that need to happen in the future can create a real challenge for us.
It’s really easy to forget about them entirely, even if they’re captured in your notebook.
I’ve found a few different approaches that all help with this…
- Add a reminder for the task in your calendar. This can work, but it’s also really easy to dismiss the event and then forget about it. If you use this approach, it’s really important to immediately add the item to your daily todo list.
- Automatically add the item to your todo list on a future date. Most digital todo apps and notebooks have a “due on” feature. Both MS Todo and Obsidian (with the Tasks plugin), for example, will let you assign a due date for a task and then automatically add it to your daily todo list on that date.
If you’re already using a digital notebook, I strongly recommend option two. For paper-based systems, option one is a good alternative.
