Reading more. Watching less.

A few years ago, one of my big goals for the year was to watch less TV and read more books.

I like a lot of nerdy sci-fi, dark fantasy, and dystopian media that my wife doesn’t particularly enjoy, which means I’d typically end up watching my shows after we watched our shows together and she went to bed.

TV shows keep me awake in a way that reading does not (even when I read ebooks on the glowing screen of my iPad). This led to me staying up far too late most nights, waking up tired, and generally starting my day poorly.

It took a while. Finding books I enjoy is hard.

Things really unlocked when I found a book series I loved, The Expanse. Once I finished that, someone tipped me off to Becky Chambers Monk & Robot and Wayfarer series. Then The Murderbot Diaries. Then Dungeon Crawler Carl.

I got so engrossed, I put off watching a lot of TV shows I love that had come back with new seasons.

When I finally wrapped up my last book, the new Murderbot and Carl books weren’t going to be out for two more weeks. Perfect time to catch up on my shows…

…and I found myself totally uninterested in it.

Season 2 of Fallout was pretty good, but I found myself basically forcing myself to get through it because I’d rather be reading!

New habit formed! ๐ŸŽ‰
