Most productivity advice is garbage
tl;dr: I’m launching a new course on how to get shit done with ADHD. If you preorder it today, you get 40% off. Keep reading to learn more…
Three weeks into my first real, full-time, I’m-a-serious-professional job, I thought I was going to get fired.
My boss kept throwing lots of work at me. Nothing too difficult, but a lot of small things. I felt overwhelmed. I’d forget to do things. I’d struggle to even start.
One day, head spinning, I opened up Google and typed in “How to get things done.”
That day, I discovered the world of productivity gurus. Down the rabbit hole I went. I built complex systems around my work. I experimented with different tools and setups.
Most of it worked for a little while. Until it didn’t anymore.
The problem with most productivity advice…
Traditional productivity advice just doesn’t work for people with ADHD. It’s not made for us.
Most systems will work for a little while, because they’re new and exciting and our brains hyperfocus on them. But eventually they get boring, and the complexity and neurotypicalness of them reveals itself. Then it all falls apart.
A complex system of reviewing tasks every day, week, month, quarter, and year? Nah, I think I’ll pass. A dozen different location-based “context tags” for which work todo? LOL GTFO!
43 different folders for managing deferred tasks? Are you fucking kidding me?
Stop fighting against your ADHD!
After years of experimenting, I eventually cobbled together a productivity system that works with my ADHD instead of fighting against it.
I’ve used it (relatively) reliably for the last 15 years, and it’s built on top of three core principles:
- Most productivity advice isn’t made for us.
- Work with your ADHD, not against it.
- Don’t obsess over the “system” to the detriment of the work.
Using this ADHD-friendly system, I…
- Completely switched careers in my early 30s.
- Did so well in my job I got a “please don’t leave the company” bonus.
- Created over 20 courses, workshops, and ebooks.
- Have spoken at multiple conferences.
- Run my own consulting and development business where I’ve worked with clients like Harvard Business School and NASA.
- Publish multiple daily newsletters.
Don’t get me wrong: there are days where my ADHD absolutely gets the best of me.
But using this system, I’ve been able to make my ADHD work for me instead of fighting against it. It’s been truly liberating, and I want that for you, too!
