Flobots
Do you remember the Flobots? They had that song Handlebars back in 2007 that was really popular.
At the time, I didn’t pay them much attention. I wrote them off as pop-alt-rap.
I was wrong!
They recently showed up on a punk playlist I stumbled onto, and holy shit am I glad they did. While they definitely are alt-rap, they’re political AF.
The song that first hooked me was Stand Up…
Stand up!
We shall not be moved,
Except by a child with no socks and shoes.
If you’ve got more to give than you’ve got to prove.
Put your hands up and I’ll copy you.
From there, I ended up on We Are Winning.
It’s a weird song about the collapse of everything and the need for solidarity in times of crisis.
Their song Rise explores similar topics with a slightly more positive “what comes next?” vibe to it.
I’m so grateful to have rediscovered this group. It’s the perfect blend of “everything is fucked” and “get off your ass and do something about it” that I need right now.
