Big picture thinking and the New Year

When you have ADHD, you tend to live in-the-moment a bit more, and follow your current passions and interests.

That’s awesome! A lot of neurotypical folks really struggle with that, but it’s often just a part of who we are. However, it also means we sometimes don’t plan for bigger goals and wants too well.

Once or twice a year, take a little bit of time to identify a few big goals.

I wrote about my personal goals for 2025 over on my other website. And I have a section focused on this (and cleaning up your second brain/notebook/todo list) in my course on Getting Shit Done with ADHD.

The New Year/holiday season is a good time to do this, but it can happen whenever. You might also revisit your goals and the summer and evaluate if they’re still what you actually want.

The whole point of getting shit done is to have a more fulfilling, rewarding life.

Whenever you perform a routine notebook cleanup, take a moment to pull up your list of goals, and view your ideas and tasks through them.

  • Does this idea or task move me towards my goals?
  • Have my goals changed? Are they still important or relevant?
  • Is this something I’m really passionate or excited about it?

If the work you’re doing isn’t getting you where you want to go, maybe you shouldn’t waste time doing it.
